Fred Sandback. Exhibition

In theinterview of 1969 an interviewer asked Fred Sandback’s opinion on the art piece inevitable price rise, taking into account that initially artists often want to make their art affordable for everyone. Sandback answered that if someone wants to get his art one should just copy it and all you need for it is a piece of string. On the journalist’s question whether that would be a genuine Sandback work or not, the artists said: “Are you claiming that there’s something special about my strings that other strings don’t have?”. Is it true that there was nothing special in the materials that Sandback used?

What if it’s not only the string that mattered? The effect produced by the minimalist work depends also on the surrounding space, lighting and other factors. An immense amount of aspects affects the way we perceive an object - not just the space and way of exposition, but also time, socio-cultural context and obviously the viewers themselves.

As a result, artists of APXIV created a research exhibition aiming not to create a set of isolated objects, but a complete immersion into the environment.
